CINTEC ANCHORS SELECTED FOR LARGEST AUSTRALIAN EARTHQUAKE RESTORATION
CINTEC Anchors have been used in the sensitive restoration of Australia's largest provincial cathedral - Christ Church Cathedral in Newcastle.
Commenced in 1893, Christ Church Cathedral was badly damaged in an earthquake in 1989. Measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, the earthquake resulted in extensive cracking in the brickwork and caused stone crosses and
finials to fall off the top of the gothic style building.
The total repair bill after the Newcastle earthquake is approximately $2,000 million Australian dollars and the cathedral is the largest and most difficult earthquake restoration project to be undertaken.
Over 200 CINTEC Anchors, measuring up to 35 meters in length, will be used in the repair scheme, that will take approximately 18 months to complete.
The work combines restoration and strengthening against future earthquakes in accordance with current design codes.
All anchors being assembled from grade 316 stainless steel to give the work a very long life span in the sale air experienced on the site on a hill near the Pacific Ocean.
"Two key factors determined the selection of the CINTEC system. Firstly, it allowed the project engineers to strictly control the grout as it was injected into the anchor, and secondly, each anchor was engineered
for specific loadings and could guarantee a load capacity'" explained structural engineer Bill Jordan, CINTEC's representative for Australasia.
The project architects and engineers were convinced that the CINTEC system was the only anchor system suitable for the job, and when the drilling started, the masonry was in such a poor condition internally that any
other system would have caused further damage.
